These documents constitute the earliest identifiable musical autographs by several centuries. They provide essential data for musical practices at Saint Martial, where Adémar contributed to their production, and for Adémar?s personal and professional involvement in those practices. They also attest the introduction to the scriptorium at Saint Martial by Adémar of accurately heighting the neumes (symbols of musical notation) above the text to which the melody is sung. Each pitch, therefore, receives a distinct position along the vertical axis of writing. This procedure shows the exact musical interval between notes, and expedites the reading and learning of the melodies. It remains today the standard convention for indicating pitch in modern Western notation.The importance of this technique is impossible to overstate because Western music and its notation place higher importance on pitch than on many other elements, such as rhythm and timbre. Therefore heighting, the device by which notation precisely communicates pitch, holds a central place in the development of the musical language. In contrast, most of the notational dialects that appear in early music manuscripts from the medieval West use, to a greater or lesser degree, the vertical placement of signs to indicate melodic direction rather than pitch. After an overview of Adémar?s biography and musical activities, the study examines in detail the four surviving manuscripts in which Adémar inscribed musical notation, and then the notation itself. Oltre ad offrire unedizione che permette di consultare
facilmente per la prima volta le Notule de scientia theologie
I-II-III (ms. Paris BnF lat. 15355, f. 40ra-b mg. inf., ms. Paris
BnF lat. 16297, f. 231v, f. 232v), la Parte Prima dello studio
condotto da Andrea Aiello e Robert Wielockx ha condotto
allevidente conclusione che queste Notule sono state vergate
dalla mano di Goffredo di Fontaines e che quindi non meritano
più di essere scartate come notes illisibles du
XVe sciècle. La Parte Seconda ha condotto
a precisazioni rilevanti a proposito della cronologia del codice
Paris BnF lat. 16297, la cui forma originaria è
caratteristica di una costituzione progressiva che si trova a
metà strada fra una costituzione in blocco e una
costituzione fatta per conglomerazione di codici preesistenti. Il
terminus a quo di un fascicolo situato nella parte anteriore del
codice fissa automaticamente il terminus a quo di un fascicolo
succesivo. E il terminus ad quem di un fascicolo collocato nella
parte posteriore del manoscritto determina per ciò stesso il
terminus ad quem di ogni fascicolo precedente. In virtù di
questo criterio generale e di diverse conferme indipendenti, il
codice ha come terminus a quo gli ultimi giorni del 1276 o anche
linizio del 1277 e come terminus ad quem il 1278. Nel 1280 e
1285 Goffredo appose aggiunte minori su fogli rismasti liberi.
Nella Terza Parte, la ricorrenza letterale di tante formule
caratteristiche dei testi dedicati da Goffredo di Fontaines allo
statuto della teologia, luso tipico delle fonti e la
presenza del pensiero proprio di Goffredo a proposito del rapporto
teologia-scienza hanno condotto alla conclusione che lautore
delle Notule de scientia theologie è Goffredo di Fontaines,
che nel 1277-1278 era attivamente occupato a preparare il suo
commentario sulle Sentenze di Pietro Lombardo. I legami delle
Notule con un gruppo di altri codici realizzati negli stesi anni
dalléquipe di Goffredo di Fontaines permettono di
considerare questi codici come facenti parte del nucleo iniziale di
volumi su cui Goffredo costituì la sua biblioteca.

Vol. IV of the series Autographa Medii
Aevi is a study of the original manuscript of the Liber Floridus
(Ghent, University Library, MS 92). This encyclopedical compilation of
the early twelfth century (finished 1121) was composed, written and
illustrated by an obscur canon of the Chapter of our Lady in Saint-Omer
(France, dépt. du Pas de Calais). It may be considered one of the
earliest illustrated medieval encyclopedias and its maps, diagrams and
pictures (some of them masterpieces of Romanesque art) are
world-famous. Due to its apparent lack of logical structure, however,
Lambert's work has often been dismissed as an unorganized
compilation. Against this still prevailing opinion the present book
shows that the encyclopedia is the expression of a highly personal
global view of the world. It was to be a brilliant synthesis, pervaded
by an emphatic sense of symbolism, allegory and eschatology. The close
codicological and textual analysis of the complete work shows also why
Lambert failed to achieve his object in its full splendour; how
especially external circumstances have caused a gradual weakening of
the original train of thought as well as of the original beauty of the
manuscript. The book focuses on the fundamental links between
Lambert's thoughts and the material structures he had to create to
give them their place in his book. Prof. Derolez has specialized for
more than thirty years into the study of the Liber Floridus. In 1968 he
edited the original manuscript in a celebrated facsimile and text
edition. In 1978 his doctoral thesis on Lambert's work was
published. The present work is the synthesis of a life's research.
For the first time the complicated genesis of the Liber Floridus is
unraveled in an international language. The reader can easily follow
the argument thanks to the fluent style and the numerous diagrams in

Cet ouvrage s'attache à mettre en
lumière un aspect encore mal connu du travail d'auteur accompli par
le théologien et mémorialiste Guibert, qui fut abbé de
Nogent-sous-Coucy entre 1104 et 1124. Il s'agit, à partir de
l'étude approfondie de trois manuscrits originaux donnés par
Guibert à son monastère et parvenus jusqu'à nous, étude confortée
par les confidences de Guibert sur lui-même, de montrer le rôle que
joua sa fonction d'écrivain dans sa vie de clerc, le caractère
solitaire de sa création littéraire et son désir constant d'être à
lui-même son propre secrétaire, et de définir aussi sa méthode de
travail. L'analyse des écritures des manuscrits, la nature de leurs
interventions, conduisent à identifier parmi elles une main dominante
et à démontrer qu'il s'agit de celle de l'auteur, qui a
rédigé de longs passages d'un exemplaire de premier ou de second
jet, et révisé son propre travail ainsi que celui de ses secrétaires;
on peut suivre, à l'aide demacrophotographies et de schémas,
l'évolution de cette main depuis la ma- turité jusqu'aux
dernières années, quand la cécité presque totale de Guibert a provoqué
une décomposition de son ductus. L'étude codicologique des
documents fait apparaître leur communauté de facture sous leurs
différences: car l'un est une belle mise au net, le second un
exemplaire de travail et le troisième une édition princeps. Ce petit
groupe forme un échantillon significatif qui témoigne pour
l'ensemble des manuscrits guibertiens aujourd'hui perdus.
Guibert, qui composait directement, sans passer par l'intermédiaire
de tablettes ou de brouillons, s'est toujours préoccupé de réaliser
des livres, agissant comme un véritable éditeur de ses textes.

Sul più antico ed autorevole manoscritto
dell'Antapodosis di Liutprando da Cremona, capostipite di tutti
testimoni della redazione più recente dell'opera, una mano diversa
da quella del copista, ma ad essa coeva, ha apportato numerose
correzioni e integrazioni, sanando gli errori di copiatura e
aggiungendo alcune parti. L'ipotesi che si tratti della mano dello
stesso Liutprando, già discussa in passato ma poi abbandonata, trova
ora conforme che paiono decisive nel convergere di elementi filologici,
codicologici e paleografici.
